Waterfront Toronto has just unveiled the first private sector development in the forthcoming 55-acre East Bayfront neighbourhood.
Being developed by Great Gulf Group of Companies and designed by Moshe Safdie, Parkside is a $200M mixed-used tower at Sherbourne Street and Queen’s Quay. Toronto City Council overwhelmingly approved the sale of the land to the developer on December 7th.
This represents Safdie’s first residential project in Canada since Expo 67′s Habitat. Although in addition to condos, the project will also include commercial and retail space (which is a good thing).
The proposal is very Safdie, modern in composition with terraces in the sky. The typical podium-and-tower typology appears to frame the planned Sherbourne park quite well and it’ll create the kind of authoritative street wall that a boulevard such as Queen’s Quay should have.
This announcement coincides with the breaking ground of George Brown College’s waterfront campus and various other public realm enhancements, which are all signs that Waterfront Toronto seems to be hitting its stride.
